Youth Peace & Justice Foundation Reestablishes Nationwide School Safety Advocacy Initiative

The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation (YPJF), operating under The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, has completed a period of organizational restructuring and has reestablished its school safety advocacy efforts to address student safety and school-community concerns nationwide.

During that restructuring and its review of the Foundation's previous school investigation program, the Foundation determined that there remains a strong need for an independent organization willing to listen to students and families and advocate when concerns about student safety or school responses are not adequately addressed.

The Foundation has therefore moved away from a formal external investigation model and established a more practical, effective, and scalable approach focused on communication, advocacy, and appropriate intervention.

In most cases, the Foundation's first step will be to establish communication with the school or appropriate school officials concerning the reported issue. The objective is to listen to the student or family, understand the concern, communicate with the school, and support a meaningful response before additional escalation is considered.

Initial submissions are reviewed by Foundation staff and, when appropriate, members of the Foundation's pro bono legal team. This review helps the Foundation understand the circumstances presented, identify appropriate avenues for advocacy, and determine whether communication with the school, school district, school board, or another appropriate entity is warranted.

 

The legal team's involvement does not mean the Foundation is acting as legal counsel for the student or family, but provides an additional level of professional review as the Foundation determines how best to respond.

When a matter remains unresolved or circumstances warrant outside review, the Foundation may assist with referrals or communicate with appropriate entities, which may include the school district, school board, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, law enforcement, or other appropriate authorities.

This approach reflects the Foundation's experience that many student safety concerns require more than an isolated inquiry. They often require communication, advocacy, collaboration, and, when necessary, engagement with institutions that have the authority and responsibility to address the underlying concern.

The initiative is intended to provide students and families with an additional avenue for raising safety concerns, particularly when they are uncertain where to seek assistance or believe their concerns have not received an adequate response.

"Our work has shown us that students need someone willing to listen and help them navigate the system when they believe their safety concerns are not being heard," said Daniel "Bodhi" Chapin, President and National Director of the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation. "We are not a replacement for schools, school districts, law enforcement, or government agencies. Our role is to listen, communicate, advocate, and help connect student safety concerns with the people and institutions responsible for addressing them."

The Foundation's previous school-related efforts resulted in matters being referred to the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights, and other appropriate entities for review.

The restructuring also recognizes that the Foundation's primary strengths and mission are centered on advocacy, prevention, restorative justice, youth empowerment, and community engagement, rather than maintaining a resource-intensive external investigative operation.

YPJF will continue accepting information from students, families, and members of school communities regarding student safety and school-community concerns.

 

These may include concerns involving threats, bullying, violence prevention, reported safety issues, concerns about how a school has responded to a report, or other circumstances affecting the safety and well-being of students.

​

Each matter will be considered individually. The Foundation will determine the appropriate course of action based on the circumstances presented, with an emphasis on communication and constructive engagement whenever appropriate.

The Foundation's approach is straightforward: listen to students, review concerns, communicate with schools, advocate for safety, and seek appropriate outside review when necessary.

By reestablishing this model, the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation is creating a more sustainable and scalable way to support students and school communities while continuing its broader national work to prevent violence, empower young people, promote restorative practices, and strengthen communities.

​

The Foundation believes that every student should have a meaningful opportunity to be heard when they raise a legitimate concern about their safety or the safety of their school community.
