Youth Peace & Justice Foundation Marks Anniversary Week of Brian Wilson's Passing & 84th Birthday; National Scholarship Continues to Honor His Legacy
VIRGINIA / NATIONAL — During the anniversary week marking one year since the passing of legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, and on the eve of his 84th birthday; the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, also known as the Uvalde Foundation For Kids announced that the Brian Wilson Memorial Scholarship will continue as an annual national scholarship program dedicated to recognizing young people who embody creativity, service, compassion, and a commitment to peace.
The scholarship, established in 2025 following Wilson's death, honors the enduring legacy of one of America's most influential musicians and cultural figures. Beyond his groundbreaking contributions to music, Wilson was widely recognized for his advocacy surrounding mental health awareness, youth well-being, and charitable causes benefiting children and families.
The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, formerly The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, created the scholarship to recognize students whose achievements in the performing arts, music, creative expression, and community service reflect the values Wilson championed throughout his life.
"Brian Wilson's music touched generations, but his compassion and humanity left an equally important legacy," said Daniel Chapin, Founder and National Director of the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation. "As we reflect on the first anniversary of his passing, we remain committed to ensuring that future generations of young artists, performers, and peace advocates continue to benefit from a scholarship established in his memory."
The Foundation noted that the inaugural recipient of the scholarship was True Schrider, an honors graduate of Patrick Henry High School in Blacksburg, Virginia, and current student at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Schrider was selected from 118 nominations submitted nationwide during the scholarship's first year and continues to serve as a Student Ambassador for the Foundation in Virginia.
The Brian Wilson Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually to students who demonstrate excellence in the arts while maintaining a record of meaningful community service. Special consideration is given to applicants engaged in youth advocacy, violence prevention, bullying prevention initiatives, mental health awareness efforts, and programs that promote safer and more peaceful schools and communities.
Applications and nominations for the Fall 2026 scholarship cycle remain open nationwide.
The Foundation is also encouraging supporters, businesses, and community organizations to contribute to the scholarship fund to ensure future opportunities for deserving students across the United States.
"Brian Wilson showed the world the transformative power of creativity," Chapin added. "This scholarship seeks to recognize young people who are using their talents not only to inspire others but to build stronger, kinder, and more peaceful communities."
