Texas Student Walkouts: YPJF Encourages Knowledge, Peace, and Organized Action

Youth Peace & Justice Foundation Supports Student Voices While Emphasizing Safe, Organized Civic Engagement

TEMPLE, TX — In response to recent Texas state guidance on student walkouts — including the Texas State Board of Education’s call for investigations into educators and administrators — the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation (YPJF) affirms its support for student voices in their communities while emphasizing that true civic power comes from knowledge, preparation, and peaceful, organized action.

“The Foundation supports the empowerment of young people to engage in their communities,” said Daniel Chapin, Founder and National Director of YPJF. “At the same time, students should remember that their greatest influence comes from knowledge, preparation, and participation in well-organized, peaceful actions. Civic engagement is most effective when it is thoughtful, safe, and coordinated with school leadership and families.”

“Communities are under real strain, and people want to be heard, but schools must remain places of learning, stability, and emotional safety. There is a time and place for protest in a healthy democracy. When students are involved, those efforts must be peaceful, organized, and coordinated with school administration. Classrooms should not become politicized spaces, and children should not be placed at the center of adult conflict.”

The Foundation is urging school leadership, counseling teams, parent organizations, and community organizers to communicate proactively ahead of any planned demonstrations involving students. YPJF strongly discourages spontaneous or unsanctioned actions that may disrupt instruction or place students in unsafe situations.

The Foundation encourages schools, families, and student organizers to:

* Coordinate with school administrators before any planned demonstrations

* Maintain safe, peaceful, and supervised participation

* Provide support for students and staff, including counseling and trauma-informed resources

Recent TEA guidance clarifies that students participating in walkouts may be marked absent, educators facilitating such actions may face investigation, and districts may be reviewed for policies allowing instructional disruptions. YPJF’s advisory helps communities navigate these circumstances safely while respecting student expression.

“Our goal is to ensure classrooms remain safe and inclusive while empowering students to participate responsibly in their communities,” Chapin added. Accountability and safety are not opposites of civic engagement — they are essential to making student voices effective.”

YPJF’s 24-Hour Community Crisis Line — 254-499-8027 — is available for guidance on peaceful participation, de-escalation, and trauma-informed support.

The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation Guide to Finding Healing & Peace Amidst Community Tension is also available for immediate distribution.
