The Youth Peace and Justice Foundation (YPJF) also known as The Uvalde Foundation For Kids nonprofit charity; with a residency chapter in Bell County, Texas; noted Monday that it is launching a temporary, emergency program to provide crucial food assistance to local families
This action is necessary because the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed that monthly SNAP food benefits won't be issued on Nov. 1 due to the government shutdown, creating an immediate hunger crisis.
Simultaneously, media reports, including those in the Houston Chronicle, indicate that new, stricter SNAP eligibility requirements are set to take effect this month.
To help families deal with both the sudden loss of November benefits and the confusion over new rules, the Foundation will be giving out H.E.B. grocery gift cards to qualified families in Bell County, Texas, throughout the month of November as a vital bridge-funding measure.
YPJF Interim Vice President Dr. Elias Thorne stated, “Losing this monthly food money now, just when major changes to the program are happening, puts kids at serious risk of going hungry. We are stepping in with temporary, bridge funding for November to ensure children can eat while their parents figure out the immediate loss of benefits and how to meet any new, complicated rules for getting future help.”
The Foundation’s targeted approach focuses exclusively on Bell County families with school-age children, utilizing H.E.B. gift cards for direct and immediate aid, which offers parents the dignity and flexibility to purchase essential groceries at a trusted local store.
This unique support is strictly temporary and designed to be a buffer, giving families one month to stabilize their food supply while they learn about the new SNAP eligibility rules and make new plans for long-term food support.
Bell County families with school-age youth who are affected by the SNAP halt and rule changes should contact the Youth Peace and Justice Foundation immediately to inquire about receiving a gift card.
The aid is being distributed on a rolling basis, but this assistance is only available for the month of November and while funds last. Families should contact Maria Sanchez, Director of Community Outreach, by email, via the foundation website or by phone at (254) 499 8027.
