National Nonprofit Clarifies Accountability Stance—Conditional Support for Camp Mystic, Pauses Financial Grant

For Immediate Release:

National Nonprofit Clarifies Accountability Stance—Conditional Support for Camp Mystic, Pauses Financial Grant

TEMPLE, TX (November 27, 2025) –

Following an overnight meeting with its shareholders and board members, including members of its national advisory council, The Youth Peace and Justice Foundation (YPJF), formerly known as The Uvalde Foundation For Kids, today issued this definitive statement to clarify its position regarding the tragic events at Camp Mystic on July 4th and the ensuing litigation, rooted in our commitment to systemic resilience and absolute accountability.

This following several news reports reflecting the foundations support of the Camp & community this week, including KXXV News in Bell County, Texas:

Clarification on Initial Assessment and the Role of the Courts

The Foundation unreservedly retracts previous statements that used language such as "jurisprudential distraction" and "weaponizing grief." We recognize that the pursuit of justice is a constitutional right and the only mechanism in this case seemingly available for seeking truth and accountability.

Our original position was adopted in good faith, based on initial reports and public information available immediately following the flood, which strongly suggested the event was an overwhelming, unforeseeable force majeure.

However, in light of the complex evidence and allegations now being presented in court, and new information made available to us: The Foundation can no longer assert that the tragedy was purely a force majeure event without further rigorous, sworn, and neutral fact-finding. We recognize that the complexity of the case demands that we outsource and trust this essential truth-seeking to the legal system.

A Commitment to Conditional Support and Systemic Justice

The YPJF is dedicated to promoting justice that results in tangible, systemic change.

Therefore, our revised stance aligns the entire Foundation with our mission's highest standards of accountability:

  Fact-Finding Role of the Court:

We accept the court's process as the necessary, impartial mechanism for determining culpability—specifically, whether Camp Mystic's actions amounted to gross negligence by failing to heed flood warnings or establish adequate evacuation plans.

  Conditional Institutional Support:

Our support for the Camp's future is not absolute. Should the court's final determination find that Camp Mystic was indeed grossly negligent and that its failure of preparation was unwarranted, the Youth Peace and Justice Foundation will formally withdraw all public support and will, itself, advocate for the ongoing closure of Camp Mystic. Furthermore our current and I going grant offers have been paused until proceedings in the case are complete or information dictates otherwise.

  The Superior Remedy:

We maintain that justice for an institutional failure of this magnitude requires systemic consequence. Our commitment to seeking closure under that condition affirms our belief that true accountability demands a superior, institutional remedy—the ultimate sacrifice of the organization’s continuity—over mere financial penalty.

Demand for Balance & Healing

While we accept the necessity of the legal system for fact-finding in this case, we fundamentally assert that there must be a balance. The adversarial demands of litigation, even when necessary, cannot consume the families and the community. We maintain that the pursuit of legal accountability must not ultimately distract from the enduring priority of spiritual healing, emotional recovery, and community restoration.

The YPJF urges all stakeholders to honor the forthcoming verdict as the definitive, necessary path forward, and to ensure that the healing of the families remains the central focus.
